Gobo Light Textures in Unity

I explain how I make gobo light textures in Unity. The process is simple. Create a black and white image of the cutout pattern you want, then apply it to a spotlight object as a ‘Cookie’. Learn the details of each step written out below or watch a short youtube video 🙂

NOTE: You must be working in a Unity 3D Project, not Universal Render Pipeline. URP does not support cookies at this time.

Create Your Texture

Create and save your gobo texture image with the cutout areas in white and a black background. I like to blur it out a little to make it feel more realistic in Unity.

Create Cookie

Drag this image into your assets window. In the inspector, change the texture type to ‘Cookie’. Change the Light Type to ‘Spotlight’, the Source to ‘From Grey Scale’ and check the box for Alpha is Transparency. Click Apply.

Add to Light

Add a spotlight object to your scene and drag the gobo texture you just made into the ‘Cookie’ slot. Change other details as desired, like color, intensity, range, etc.

NOTE: You must be working in a Unity 3D Project, not Universal Render Pipeline. URP does not support cookies at this time.
